FLOTUS to head up Olympic delegation

First Lady Michelle Obama will head up the presidential delegation to the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony this summer.

President Barack Obama on Friday named FLOTUS, the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom and four Olympic medalists to the U.S. delegation.

“This summer I’ll be cheering on Team U.S.A. at the Olympic Games in London with this distinguished group of champions who truly represent the best of our country,” First Lady Michelle Obama said, according to a White House press release. “Olympians and Paralympians are true American heroes and role models for all of us, especially our young people. And I know that this delegation will help inspire a generation of young people to get into the Olympic spirit by getting active and healthy so they can reach their fullest potential and reach their dreams.”

The First Lady will be joined by Ambassador Louis Susman, two-time women’s soccer gold medalist Brandi Chastain, women’s gymnastics gold medalist Dominique Dawes, Paralympic javelin gold medalist Gabriel Diaz de Leon, men’s basketball gold medalist Grant Hill and two-time women’s swimming gold medalist Summer Sanders at the Opening Ceremony on July 27. The delegation will attend the ceremony, meet U.S. athletes and try to use the Summer Games to inspire kids to become more healthy and active, the press release noted.

Dawes is the co-chair of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, and Grant Hill is also a member of the council.
